For The Hotel Half Of Your Platinum

You already know Amex FHR. Here is how we compare.

Lodging only · We do not book flights, cruises, or rental cars · Keep using your card for those
    Section № 01 · A Note From the Founders

We have the card. We still book through ourselves. Here is why, honestly.

We are Ryan and Renae. We run Room Service, a small, hotels-only travel agency, out of Mallorca and Colorado. We carry Amex Platinum and Centurion ourselves, and we have booked plenty of stays through Fine Hotels + Resorts over the years. So we are going to assume you already know how FHR works — and just walk through, honestly, how booking the same hotel through us compares.

A quick clarification: FHR is broader than us. It also covers flights, cruises, and rental cars. We don't. Book your flights with whatever card earns you the most points, use your favorite car service, and let us handle the part of the trip that actually decides whether the week was great: the hotel.

On most hotels we share with FHR, the public rate is identical — hotels enforce parity. What changes is the perks layered on, where you sit in the upgrade queue, whether you keep your brand loyalty points, how much money you tie up at booking, and who picks up the phone when something goes sideways at 11pm. Most of those answers are "it depends" — and that range of outcomes is exactly why it is worth letting us look before you book.

    Section № 02 · The Short Version

Two good ways to book a luxury hotel. They are not the same tool.

Amex FHR (What You Know) · Hotels

~2,200 vetted properties. A standardized perk stack at every one: daily breakfast for two, a $100 property credit per stay, room upgrade on availability, noon check-in / 4pm late checkout (both guaranteed in writing), and a welcome amenity. Most rates are prepaid in full at booking. Brand loyalty points and elite-night credit are inconsistent. Service comes from the Amex Travel call center.

    Room Service · Hotels Only

Same hotel rate as the program in most cases. Perks layered in. Brand loyalty points retained on most of our partner programs. One small team that knows your name. We do not book flights or cars — keep using your card for those.

Section № 03 · What a Good Advisor Actually Does

Five things any good advisor delivers. And what changes when the advisor is us.

Card programs are great at delivering a standardized perk stack. They were not built to do most of what follows. Here is the honest line between the two.

    № 01

Daily breakfast for two — the part that is genuinely the same.

    Amex FHR

Included at every FHR property for every guest in the room. Reliable, no surprises, no ambiguity. This is FHR at its best.

    With Us

Included on essentially every property at this tier through Virtuoso, Cadence, and direct preferred programs. On this single perk, we are at parity with FHR. We are not going to pretend otherwise.

    № 02

The $100 property credit — usually a wash, occasionally not.

    Amex FHR

FHR gives you a $100 credit per stay (dining, spa, etc.), no matter how long you stay. Clean and predictable. Five nights, still $100.

    With Us

Same $100 on most stays. Sometimes more — Marriott STARS guarantees $100 on every booking, many Hyatt Privé and Rosewood Elite properties layer on additional resort credits, and on longer stays through some partner programs the credit scales by night. Range of outcomes: $100 to a few hundred. Worth a 30-second check before you book.

    № 03

Late checkout — both deliver. The "how" is different.

    Amex FHR

FHR's strongest single line: noon check-in and 4pm checkout, guaranteed in writing at every property. If you value the contractual guarantee above all else, this is hard to beat.

    With Us

4pm on almost every booking — you just ask. Many of our hotel partners will formally guarantee it to match FHR when we request. If your flight needs 6pm, we push for that, which FHR cannot. Range: same outcome as FHR most of the time, better than FHR some of the time, occasionally the property says no and you got a guaranteed FHR booking instead. Worth checking.

    № 04

Room upgrade — same perk on paper, different spot in line.

    Amex FHR

FHR upgrades are "subject to availability" at check-in, processed through the hotel's standard channel-based pecking order alongside other VIP booking platforms.

    With Us

Same "subject to availability" language. Different position in the queue. Hotels generally process upgrades in this order: preferred-partner advisor with a direct relationship (us) → FHR / Chase Edit → direct booker → OTA. Range of outcomes: sometimes identical to FHR, sometimes one category better, sometimes a meaningful jump. We also call the property and advocate by name. FHR does not.

    № 05

Brand loyalty points & elite nights — FHR's biggest blind spot.

    Amex FHR

Sometimes FHR earns brand points and elite nights, sometimes it doesn't. It varies by chain, property, and rate, and the program doesn't make it obvious in advance. You often find out after the stay.

    With Us

Consistent and clear: Hyatt Privé, Marriott STARS and Luminous, Accor Hera, and Hilton Impresario all earn full points and elite-night credit on our rates. If you are working toward Globalist, Bonvoy Titanium, or ALL Diamond, this is the line that quietly matters most.

    № 06

Cash flow at booking — FHR usually wants it all up front.

    Amex FHR

Most FHR rates are prepaid in full and non-refundable at booking. A $30,000 honeymoon nine months out means $30,000 leaves your account today.

    With Us

Our partner-program rates are overwhelmingly pay-at-hotel. The same trip stays in your savings (or your investment account) until the day you check in. On a big-ticket booking far in advance, this is real money.

    № 07

Who you talk to — call center vs the same two humans.

    Amex FHR

Amex Travel call center. New agent every call. Friendly and capable, but they do not know you, your trip, or anyone at your hotel. Escalation paths exist but require effort.

    With Us

Two people. The same two people, every time. We have visited these hotels, sat down with the GMs, and built the relationships behind the perks. When something is off at the property, you text us and we make the call ourselves — to a person who knows us by name.

    № 08

After-booking rate monitoring — FHR doesn't. We do.

    Amex FHR

Once you book FHR, the rate is locked. If the property drops the price the week before you arrive, FHR will not flag it or rebook you.

    With Us

We monitor every booking. If the rate drops by $100 or more before arrival, we rebook you at the lower price. You do not have to ask, check, or notice.

    Section № 04 · Side By Side

Amex FHR vs a Hotel Advisor.

Section № 05 · When To Use Which

Honestly, here is when each one wins.

    № 01

    Stick with Amex FHR when

    • ·You hold Platinum, Business Platinum, or Centurion and the hotel is on FHR.
    • ·It is a single short stay and you specifically want the guaranteed 4pm checkout in writing as the deciding factor.
    • ·You do not care about brand loyalty points or elite nights for this trip.
    • ·You are happy to prepay the stay in full, non-refundable, at booking.
    • ·You do not need a human in the loop — a clean perk stack is exactly the job.
    № 02

    Have us look first when

    • ·Stays average $750+/night or it is a special trip (honeymoon, milestone, multi-property).
    • ·You want priority in the upgrade queue, not just "subject to availability."
    • ·You want to keep your Bonvoy, World of Hyatt, ALL, or Hilton status and points.
    • ·You would rather not have a five-figure non-refundable prepayment sitting at Amex for nine months.
    • ·You want one real person on your side at the property — not a rotating call center.
    • ·You just want a second set of eyes. We will tell you honestly which channel wins on your specific booking.
    Section № 06 · The Fine Print

    You cannot stack these.

You cannot combine FHR perks with our perks on the same booking. One channel, one set of perks. That is how rate parity works.

But the base rate being the same does not mean the booking is the same. Different channels surface different room categories, different promotional rates, and different inventory. And many of our partner hotels will match an FHR rate for us on request — meaning you keep brand points, elite credit, our perks, and our upgrade priority at the same price.

This is the whole point: you cannot tell, in advance, which channel wins on a specific hotel on specific dates. The range of outcomes — credit amount, upgrade spot, loyalty earning, cash-flow terms, advocacy at the property — is wide enough that it is genuinely worth a 30-second check. Send us the property and dates. We will tell you honestly which one to book. About one in three times we find something better; the rest of the time we say so, and you book FHR with our blessing.

Section № 07 · The Easiest Way to Compare

Tell us the hotel. We will tell you which channel wins.

Drop the property and dates. We will quote our rate, flag if Amex FHR beats it, and lay the perks out side by side. If your card portal wins, we will say so.

We'll Check Your Rate & VIP Perks

    Section № 08 · Reader Questions

    The questions in our inbox.

№ 01If FHR breakfast and the $100 credit are basically the same as yours, why bother comparing?+

Because the perks you can see on the FHR landing page are the easy part. The differences live in the parts FHR does not advertise: where you sit in the upgrade queue, whether you earn brand points and elite nights, whether the rate is prepaid or pay-at-hotel, and who you actually reach when something is off at the property. On a single short stay, those often do not matter much. On a $20K+ trip or a status-earning year, they add up to thousands of dollars and a meaningfully better stay.

№ 02Are your rates really the same as FHR?+

On the base public rate, yes — hotels enforce parity. But "same rate" does not mean "same booking." Channels surface different room categories, promotional rates, and unpublished inventory. And many of our hotel partners will match an FHR rate for us on request, which means you can keep brand points, elite nights, our perks, and a higher spot in the upgrade queue at the same price your Platinum was going to charge.

№ 03Do you really get better upgrade priority than FHR?+

Usually, yes. The general pecking order at most luxury hotels is: preferred-partner advisor (us) first, then card programs like FHR and Chase Edit, then direct bookers, then OTAs. Same available upgrade, your name is typically higher on the list when we book it. We also pick up the phone and ask, which moves the needle more than any policy. The honest range: sometimes identical to FHR, sometimes one category better, sometimes a meaningful jump.

№ 04Why does the FHR prepayment thing actually matter?+

Most FHR rates are non-refundable and paid in full at booking. For a $5,000 weekend, not a big deal. For a $30,000 family trip booked nine months out, that is $30,000 sitting at Amex instead of in your savings or investments for most of a year. Our partner-program rates are overwhelmingly pay-at-hotel, so the cash stays with you until check-in.

№ 05Do I earn brand loyalty points and elite nights through you?+

On most of our partner programs, yes — Hyatt Privé, Marriott STARS and Luminous, Accor Hera, and Hilton Impresario all earn full points and elite-night credit. FHR is inconsistent on this: sometimes it earns, sometimes it doesn't, and the answer is rarely clear at booking. If you are chasing Globalist, Titanium, or ALL Diamond this year, that one line is the whole game.

    № 06Do you charge extra to book?+

No. No fee, no markup, no planning charge on stays averaging $2,000+. We are paid by the hotel, the same way Amex Travel is. The rate you pay is the same as direct.

№ 07What if my hotel is on FHR and you have it too?+

We will tell you honestly which booking gets you more. FHR sometimes wins on a single short stay where the guaranteed 4pm checkout is the deciding factor. Our channel usually wins on longer stays, points-earning, advance bookings (because of prepayment), and any time human advocacy at the property matters.

    № 08What about Chase The Edit?+

We wrote a separate honest breakdown of Chase The Edit vs a travel advisor. Smaller catalog (~1,100 properties), similar perks, weaker late-checkout policy. Same conclusion at the end: same base rate, different perks, no brand points on Edit rates either.
