How do you get to Punta de Mita?

Fly into Puerto Vallarta (PVR). Punta de Mita is roughly a 45-minute drive north along Banderas Bay. Every resort here arranges private transfers, typically $120 to $200 each way for a private SUV. Naviva and the Mandarina properties are further north and take longer.

What's the difference between the gated Punta Mita community and the resorts outside it?

The gated Punta Mita development covers about 1,500 acres on the headland and holds Four Seasons, St. Regis, Naviva, the two Jack Nicklaus courses, and the private residences. Susurros del Corazón, Conrad, and W sit just outside the gates in Higuera Blanca and Litibú. Outside the gates means easier access to Sayulita and San Pancho, and generally lower rates. Inside the gates means more seclusion and golf access.

When is the best time to visit?

November through April is the dry season: warm, sunny, and the highest rates. Humpback whales are in Banderas Bay from roughly December through March and you can often see them from your terrace. May and early June are good shoulder value. July through October is the rainy and hurricane season, with afternoon storms, lush green landscape, and prices that can drop 30 to 50 percent.

Can you swim at these beaches?

It depends on the property. The Four Seasons and St. Regis beaches inside the gated community are the calmest and most swimmable. The Litibú and Higuera Blanca beaches at Conrad, W, and Susurros are surf beaches with more break, which is great for surfing and watching, less ideal for small children. We will tell you which is which before you book.

Punta Mita has two Jack Nicklaus Signature courses, Pacífico and Bahía. Pacífico has the Tail of the Whale, the only natural-island green in the world, reachable by amphibious cart. Course access is generally limited to guests of the resorts inside the gated community and residents. If golf is central to the trip, that usually points you to Four Seasons or St. Regis.

What VIP perks do you get us?

It depends on the property and the program it belongs to (Four Seasons Preferred Partner, Auberge Signature Access, Marriott STARS or Luminous, Hilton Impresario). Generally that means upgrade priority, a food and beverage or property credit, and early check-in / late checkout when possible. Yes. Riviera Nayarit is one of the more heavily touristed and well-policed stretches of the Mexican Pacific, and the Punta Mita development itself is a gated community with controlled access. The highway from PVR is well-maintained and well-traveled. Standard travel sense applies, as it does anywhere.

Can we combine Punta de Mita with Sayulita or the Mandarina resorts?

Easily. Sayulita and San Pancho are 20 to 35 minutes north and make good day trips. The Mandarina properties are about 45 minutes north and pair well as a two- or three-night second leg if you want jungle and cliffs after a beach week. We put split-stay itineraries together regularly.

About us.

We're Ryan and Renae. Ryan's spent much of his career in the industry: front desk shifts while in college, the pricing team at Wynn and Encore Las Vegas, and on the corporate side at TripAdvisor and Expedia. Renae ran her own full-service luxury travel agency for 7 years before we joined forces. Between us we've lived in 7 countries and stayed in more hotels than we can remember (and a few we'd rather forget).

Punta de Mita is the headland at the north end of Banderas Bay, about 45 minutes from Puerto Vallarta. Part of it is the gated Punta Mita development, home to Four Seasons, St. Regis, and two Jack Nicklaus courses. The rest, Higuera Blanca and the coast running north, is where the newer, more design-led properties have landed.

The resorts here get marketed as interchangeable Pacific beach hotels. They are not. Tell us the trip and we'll tell you which one fits.

Punta de Mita sits at the tip of Banderas Bay in Riviera Nayarit. Some of these are inside the gated Punta Mita community; others are just outside it, on the surf coast running north. Here's how we see them.

Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita

Four Seasons Punta Mita opened in 1999 and effectively created the luxury market on this coast. Casitas spread across a private beach inside the gated community, two Jack Nicklaus courses (including the famous Tail of the Whale island green), a strong kids' club, and service that is consistent in the way Four Seasons service is consistent. It is not the most design-forward property here, and it doesn't try to be. Best for multi-gen families, golfers, and anyone who wants zero surprises.
